Can $8.50 really make a difference?

18 Feb

We’d like to recognize our partners at Delicate Fortress for their inspiring work in conjunction with Craft Hope for their maternal birth kit project – helping moms and their newborns in Haiti!

A birth kit

1 in 8 Haitian children dies before they reach the age of 5 and their maternal mortality rate is 1,400 in 100,00. Both of these statistics are a true reflection of the fact that only 1 in 100,000 Haitians has access to a physician. Craft Hope and Delicate Fortress are helping give women and their beautiful babies a better shot at survival – with simple birth kits.

Kits being loaded for distribution

Here is a list of the kit contents and cost breakdown.

  • 1 alcohol wipe – $0.15
  • 1 oz. bar soap – $0.66
  • 1 36″ x 36″ handmade receiving blanket and handmade tote – $5
  • 1 Purell packet – $0.06
  • 1 pair of Netrile latex gloves – $0.09
  • 1 36″ x 48″ plastic sheeting – $0.80
  • 1 gallon ziplock bag – $0.15
  • 3 pieces of 12″ string – $0.10
  • 1 handmade stuffed animal – $1.50

They sold 87 birth kits which means:

  •  87 more mothers and babies who will have a healthier start to life compared to so many other women and babies before them.
  •  87 children who will actually have a toy to play with – perhaps the first thing they will grasp when they are 3 months old – perhaps the only toy they will have.
  •  87 more babies that will be lovingly wrapped in handmade blankets that you have either created or sponsored.
  •  87 more midwives that will go into a delivery situation more thoroughly equipped to perform a duty they find passion and purpose in.

It’s pretty astounding what $8.50 can do! If you would like to be part of this initiative, kits are available through Delicate Fortress here.
